How many dead pixels are acceptable?
Fewer than you would like, and more than you would hope. The industry standard allows a handful of faulty pixels before a panel counts as defective: Around 4 dead pixels on a Full HD screen and 16 on a 4K one are still "within tolerance". That is why your strongest card is rarely the warranty. It is the return window, and it is ticking.
The short answer
One dead pixel is usually not enough for a warranty claim, because most manufacturers follow a tolerance standard (ISO 9241-307) that permits a small number of faulty pixels as normal. Inside the retailer's return window none of that matters: You can return the set because you are not happy with it, no defect argument needed. So test early, and if the panel disappoints, return rather than claim.
The standard, in real numbers
Most consumer panels are sold as "Class II" under ISO 9241-307. Class II allows, per million pixels: 2 pixels stuck fully bright, 2 fully dead, and 5 with a single faulty sub-pixel. Scaled to real screens, that means a panel still counts as acceptable with roughly:
- Full HD (1080p), 2.1 million pixels: up to 4 bright, 4 dead and 10 sub-pixel faults.
- 4K, 8.3 million pixels: up to 16 bright, 16 dead and 41 sub-pixel faults.
- 8K, 33.2 million pixels: up to 66 bright, 66 dead and 165 sub-pixel faults.
Read those 4K numbers again, because they explain most rejected claims: A brand can point at the standard and call sixteen dead pixels normal. In practice panels are far better than the standard demands, and most arrive with zero faults. But the tolerance is what the paperwork leans on when you ask for a repair.
Two things tilt a claim back in your favour. Clusters count separately: Several faults close together are treated more strictly than the same number spread out. And individual manufacturer policies differ, some better than the standard, so it is always worth reading the pixel policy for your specific brand and model class before deciding anything.
Why the return window beats the warranty
A warranty claim argues about whether the panel is defective, and the tolerance standard sits on the other side of the table. A return inside the retailer's window needs no argument at all. In the EU, anything bought online can be returned within 14 days without giving a reason. Many retailers give longer, often 30 days, in store and online alike.
That is the whole strategy: Test the panel in the first days, not the first months. Run the Dead Pixel Test the evening the TV arrives. A dot you find on day 3 is a free exchange. The same dot found on day 40 is a debate about Class II tolerances.
How to document a pixel fault
If you are past the return window, or the count is high enough for a real claim, evidence decides it. Do this:
- Show a solid color that makes the fault obvious: The white screen for dead pixels, the black screen for bright ones, and the single red, green and blue fields for sub-pixel faults.
- Photograph the whole screen first, then the spot up close, with the room dim so the fault is unmistakable. Note the position of every fault.

When a single pixel still wins
Not every single-pixel case is lost. A pixel stuck bright in the middle of the picture is far more disturbing than the standard's arithmetic admits, and support staff know it. Ask politely, with photos, and mention if the set is nearly new; goodwill exchanges on premium sets are common even where the policy would not require one. Some premium monitor lines even sell explicit zero-bright-pixel guarantees, and while televisions rarely do, a brand's own policy can be stricter than ISO Class II. It costs one email to find out.
