Privacy Policy

TV Test is provided by Kraus und Karnath GbR ("we", "us"). This policy explains what data we handle when you use this website, and, just as importantly, what we deliberately do not touch.

The short version: every test runs inside your browser and the results stay there. We never receive them. There is no account system and nothing is uploaded. The only information that reaches our servers is anonymous website analytics that tells us how many people visited which page.

2. What we do not collect

Because this is the most common question, and because our tests necessarily read a lot about your device, we lead with it:

Your test results. The capability report reads your screen size, HDR support, codecs, copy protection and audio setup. All of it is computed and displayed inside your browser. None of it is transmitted to us, stored by us, or logged anywhere. If you want to share a report, you have to copy it yourself and send it deliberately.
A device fingerprint. The information our tests read could in principle be combined into a device fingerprint. We do not do that, we do not send it anywhere, and we do not use it to recognize you across visits or across sites.
Anything from your camera or microphone. Tests that need them will ask first, will say why, and will process everything on the device. Nothing is streamed or uploaded.
Files, photos, contacts, location, or calendar data. We never ask for access to any of these.
Ads and ad targeting. This site shows no third-party advertising. We do not use your data to target ads, and we do not build advertising or marketing profiles about you.
Account information or passwords. There is no account system, so there is nothing to sign up for and no password for us to store.

3. What we do collect

3.1 Website analytics

We use Firebase Analytics (part of Google Analytics) to measure how the website is used. It sends the following to Google on our behalf:

Page views and navigation - which pages are opened, in what order, and how long a visit lasts.
Technical and diagnostic data - browser type and version, operating system, screen size, and the country derived from your IP address. The IP address itself is not stored by us.
A pseudonymous identifier that lets us count unique visitors without knowing who you are.

We do not link this data to your name, email address, or any other identity. The technical data above is collected by the analytics SDK for its own operation and is not connected to the results of any test you run.

3.2 Server logs

This site is hosted on Google Firebase Hosting, which keeps standard web server request logs. These are operated by Google as our processor and are used for delivering the site and for security.

To understand which tests people actually use, so we know what to build next
To find pages that are broken or unusably slow, particularly on TV browsers
To keep the site available and secure

We do not use this data for advertising, profiling, or resale.

5. Legal basis (GDPR)

The analytics data described in section 3 includes a limited amount of personal data, chiefly the pseudonymous identifier and the IP-derived country. We rely on our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in keeping the website working and in understanding how it is used so we can improve it. We do not use this data for advertising or profiling, and you can object to this processing at any time (see section 9).

6. Data sharing

Firebase Analytics and Firebase Hosting are services provided by Google LLC / Google Ireland Ltd. They act as processors on our behalf. Google's privacy terms apply to their handling of the transmitted data: firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

We do not sell data. We do not share data with advertisers, brokers, or marketing partners. We may publish aggregated, non-identifiable statistics, for example "this many people ran a capability test last month".

If our business is ever acquired, any data we hold would transfer to the acquiring entity under the same terms as this policy. We would notify users via the website before any such transfer takes effect.

7. International data transfers

Firebase data is processed on Google's global infrastructure, including servers in the United States. Google relies on Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for these transfers. See Google's documentation linked in section 6 for details.

8. Data retention

Firebase Analytics event data is retained for 14 months, which is Google's default. Server logs are retained according to Google Firebase Hosting's own retention schedule. Both are configured in the Firebase Console and can be shortened on request.

Because we hold no identifiable data, there is nothing we can tie back to an individual person.

9. Your rights

You can exercise the following rights at any time:

Stop data collection: block google-analytics.com in your browser, or install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. The tests themselves will carry on working, because they do not depend on analytics.
Request information: email us and we will tell you everything we can associate with your device. In practice this is nothing, because the analytics data is pseudonymous and the test results never reach us.
Object to processing: email us and we will stop any processing based on legitimate interest that relates to you.
Supervisory authority: if you believe we have mishandled your data you may lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany (ldi.nrw.de), or the authority in your own EU member state.

10. Children

TV Test is intended for general audiences and is not designed for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used the site and you would like us to confirm no data is associated with them, contact us at the address above.

11. Cookies

This website sets a minimal set of first-party cookies for the Firebase / Google Analytics SDK described in section 3.1. No third-party advertising cookies are used.

We also store one item in your browser's local storage, under the key tvtAcceptCookies, purely to remember that you have already seen the cookie notice so we do not show it on every page. It contains no personal data and is never transmitted.

When you first visit the site we show a short cookie notice that links back to this policy. Your browser's "block third-party cookies" or "do not track" settings will further limit what is collected, and the tests will continue to work regardless.

12. Companion apps

We are building companion apps for iOS and Android. They are not released yet. When they are, this policy will be updated to describe exactly what they handle, before they ship.

13. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be announced on the changelog.
