Black screen

A pure black field, filling the whole screen, with nothing else on it. Useful for finding light leaking from the edges of an LCD, for spotting a bright pixel that only shows against black, and for simply blacking out a TV without switching it off.

The test

The full screen field needs JavaScript to run. Everything below still explains what this color reveals, so the page is useful either way.

Black screen, full screen

Fills the entire screen with nothing else on it. Press back or escape to leave. On a television, open this page in the set's own browser and drive it with the remote.

What this field reveals

Backlight bleed

On an LCD, glowing edges or corners are light escaping from the backlight. Judge it in a dark room, and see the backlight bleed test for the graded fields.

Bright and stuck pixels

A dot that stays lit on black is a hot or stuck pixel. The dead pixel test cycles every color needed to identify it.

Clouding

Lighter grey patches spread across the panel rather than at the edges. The clouding guide explains what helps.

Dust and marks

Against pure black, surface dust and smears are almost invisible; switch to the white screen for those.

Quick answer

A black screen test fills the display with pure black so anything that should be dark but is not becomes obvious. On an LCD, glowing patches at the edges are backlight bleed and lighter grey areas across the panel are clouding. A dot that stays lit is a stuck or hot pixel. On an OLED, black should be completely black, because the pixels switch off entirely; any glow at all points at the source or the room, not the panel.

Questions people ask

What is a black screen test used for?

It fills the display with pure black so faults that only show in darkness become visible: backlight bleed at the edges of an LCD, clouding across the panel, and stuck or hot pixels that stay lit. It is also handy as a plain black background, for example to check reflections in a room or to blank a screen during a presentation.

Why is my TV screen glowing on black?

On an LCD that is normal to a degree. The backlight stays on to produce black, so a little light escapes, most often at the edges and corners. Strong, uneven glow is backlight bleed and worth judging while the set can still be returned. On an OLED there is no backlight, so a truly black picture should show no glow at all.

How do I make my screen completely black?

Open this page and start the black field; it fills the screen and hides the browser interface. Press the back or escape key on the remote to leave it. Nothing is installed and the page works in the television's own browser.
