Can you fix OLED burn-in?
The honest answer depends on which problem you actually have. Most of what people panic about is temporary image retention, and that clears itself. Real burn-in is permanent. Here is how to tell the two apart, what genuinely fixes retention, and how to keep true burn-in from ever setting in.
Retention is not burn-in
They look similar and get used interchangeably, but they are different problems with very different outcomes.
- Image retention is a faint ghost of something static, a channel logo or a paused game, that lingers for a moment after the picture changes. It is temporary. It fades on its own within minutes to hours of normal, varied viewing, and a screen wash speeds that up.
- Burn-in is permanent. After hundreds or thousands of hours showing the same static element, those pixels have aged more than their neighbours and stay visibly dimmer forever. Nothing brings worn pixels back.
The good news: On a modern OLED, in normal use, what you see is almost always the first one.
How to tell which one you have
Show the panel a series of full solid colors and watch the ghost. If it fades after a few minutes of moving, varied content, it was retention and you are fine. If it survives that, and stays in exactly the same spot on every color, it is burn-in. Fixing image retention
Two things clear it, from gentlest to strongest:
- Just watch normally. Varied moving content exercises the pixels evenly and retention usually fades by itself within an hour or two.
- Run a screen wash. Cycling colors across the whole panel evens the pixels out faster. Our OLED test includes one, and it only touches temporary retention.
- Let the pixel refresh run. Every OLED has a built-in maintenance cycle (more on the names below). It runs on its own after some hours of use, and you can usually trigger it from the menu. It takes several minutes to an hour and is the strongest of the routine fixes.
Real burn-in: What you can and cannot do
If it is genuine burn-in, be wary of anyone promising a cure. A panel refresh can even out mild wear a little by nudging every other pixel down to match, but it does that by ageing the whole panel slightly, not by reviving the worn pixels. It softens the mark; it does not remove it. There is no software, no video, and no setting that restores burnt pixels, because the damage is physical wear, not a stuck state.
The built-in protections, by brand
Every OLED ships with defenses running quietly in the background. The maintenance cycle in particular is worth knowing by name, and worth letting finish when the TV asks:

There are two kinds. A short one runs automatically every few hours of viewing and clears retention. A longer, deeper one runs after a few thousand hours, or on request, and rebalances the whole panel. Let both finish; do not pull the plug mid-cycle.
How to keep burn-in away
Burn-in needs the same bright, static thing on screen for a very long time. Deny it that:
- Lower OLED Light or brightness. A dimmer panel wears far more slowly.
- Leave the pixel shift and logo-dimming features on. They are on by default for a reason.
- Vary what you watch. A rolling news channel, a game with a fixed HUD, or a stock ticker left on for hours a day is the real risk, not films and mixed viewing.
- Use a screen saver, and do not leave the TV paused on a bright menu for hours.
Questions people ask
Will my OLED definitely get burn-in?
No. In normal, varied viewing a modern OLED is very unlikely to burn in over its usable life. The risk is concentrated in a narrow case: The same bright static element, on screen for many hours a day, at high brightness, for years. Mixed content at a sensible brightness is fine.
Does the pixel refresh fix burn-in?
It fixes retention, not true burn-in. The refresh evens out uneven wear so a faint mark is less visible, but it works by ageing the rest of the panel down to match, not by restoring the worn pixels. Real burn-in cannot be undone.
How many hours before an OLED burns in?
There is no fixed number. It depends on brightness, on how static the content is, and on the panel. The same logo shown very brightly for eight hours a day will mark far sooner than mixed viewing at a moderate brightness, which may never show anything at all.
