OLED vs QLED vs LED: Which should you buy?
Three names, but really only two technologies, and one of the three is a brand of the other in disguise. Once you see the one distinction that actually matters, the choice gets simple. Here is what separates them, and which suits which room and budget.
The one distinction that matters
Everything comes down to a single question: Does each pixel make its own light, or is there a separate backlight behind the panel?
- OLED pixels light themselves. To show black, a pixel simply switches off, so black is truly black and contrast is effectively infinite.
- LED and QLED are LCD panels with a backlight behind them. To show black, the panel tries to block that always-on light, and never quite manages it, so blacks are a dark grey and the light can leak unevenly as clouding.
That is the whole story in miniature. Everything else, brightness, color, price, burn-in, follows from it.
LED and QLED are the same technology
This trips up almost everyone. QLED is not a rival to OLED; it is a premium LED LCD. The "Q" is a quantum-dot layer added to a normal backlit LCD to make its colors brighter and more saturated. Useful, but it does not change the fundamentals: A QLED still has a backlight, still shows greyish blacks, and can still cloud. Think of the ladder as basic LED, then QLED as a brighter, more colorful LED, then OLED as a different thing altogether.
OLED: The strengths and the catch
OLED wins on everything that depends on contrast: Perfect blacks, no clouding, superb shadow detail, and wide viewing angles that stay accurate off to the side. For films in a dim room it is in a class of its own. The catches are three: It generally does not get as bright as a top QLED (a real consideration in a sunny room), it costs more, and it carries a small risk of burn-in if you leave the same static image on screen for many hours a day. For mixed viewing at a sensible brightness, that risk is very low.
Mini-LED: The middle ground
Worth knowing about, because it muddies the two-camp picture in a good way. Mini-LED is still an LCD with a backlight, but that backlight is split into thousands of tiny dimming zones that switch off behind dark areas. The result is far deeper blacks and much less clouding than ordinary LED, plus the high brightness and zero burn-in risk of LCD. It is the closest an LCD gets to OLED contrast, and a strong pick for a bright room.
So which should you buy?
- Dim room, films and games, contrast above all: OLED. Nothing matches its blacks, as long as you are not parking a news channel on it eight hours a day.
- Bright room, sport and daytime TV, or a tighter budget: A good QLED or Mini-LED. The extra brightness cuts through daylight, and there is no burn-in to think about.
- Value above all: A solid LED LCD still makes a fine everyday TV; just expect greyer blacks and some clouding on a big cheap one.
Questions people ask
Is QLED better than OLED?
Not better, different. QLED is a bright, colorful LCD, so it wins in a sunny room and has no burn-in risk. OLED wins on black level, contrast and viewing angles, which matters most for films in a dim room. Neither is simply superior; it depends on your room and what you watch.
Does QLED have the same perfect blacks as OLED?
No. A QLED is still a backlit LCD, so its blacks are a dark grey rather than true black, and the backlight can leak as clouding. Only OLED (and to a lesser degree Mini-LED) gets close to switching black areas fully off.
Should I avoid OLED because of burn-in?
For most people, no. Burn-in only becomes a real risk with the same bright, static content on screen for many hours a day over years. With mixed viewing at a sensible brightness a modern OLED is very unlikely to mark. If you leave one channel or a game HUD on all day, a QLED is the safer choice.
