Why is my TV picture blurry or soft?
A soft or fuzzy TV picture is almost never a broken panel. It is nearly always the resolution of what you are watching, a sharpness or picture-mode setting, or a slow connection feeding a low-quality stream. Here is how to tell which one it is, and fix it.
Check what resolution is actually reaching the screen
A 4K TV fed a 1080p or standard-definition source has to stretch that picture to fill the panel, and it comes out soft. The set does its best to upscale, but it cannot invent detail that was never sent. Run the screen resolution test to see what the panel is really displaying, and make sure the app, box or channel is set to output the highest resolution it offers. Turn sharpness down, not up
It feels backwards, but a high sharpness setting does not add detail: It adds a thin fake halo around edges that hides fine detail and makes the whole picture look coarse rather than crisp. Turn Sharpness down to zero, or close to it, and look at some text or a face. It usually looks cleaner at once. Our first six settings guide runs through this and the other quick wins.
The stream may be the problem, not the TV
Netflix, YouTube, Disney+ and the rest quietly drop the picture quality when your connection cannot keep up, so the image turns soft and blocky for a while, then sharpens. If it is worst just after you press play, or comes and goes, suspect the network. Check the app's own quality setting is on High or Auto, then run the TV speed test to see the real speed at the set. Blurry only when things move?
If the picture is sharp when still but smears during sport or fast action, that is not a soft picture, it is motion blur, and it has a different cause. Wrong picture mode or eco dimming
Some picture modes, and the energy-saving settings, soften and dim the image on purpose. Switch the picture mode to Cinema, Movie or Filmmaker, and turn off Eco and the ambient light sensor so the TV stops quietly changing the picture behind your back. Why is my 4K TV picture not sharp?
Most often it is being fed a lower-resolution source. A 4K panel showing a 1080p or standard-definition channel looks soft because it has to upscale. Check the resolution test, and set your apps and box to output 4K where they can.
Does turning up sharpness fix a blurry TV?
No, it usually makes it worse. High sharpness adds a fake edge halo that hides fine detail. Set sharpness near zero and fix the real cause instead, which is usually the source resolution, a slow stream, or the picture mode.
Why does my TV look blurry only during sport?
That is motion blur, not a soft picture. Fast action on a 60Hz panel, or with heavy processing switched on, can smear. Check the motion test, and consider a higher refresh rate if you watch a lot of fast sport.
