How to read an LG TV model number
A code like OLED65C4PUA looks like a jumble, but every part of it means something: the panel technology, the screen size, where the set sits in the range, which year it came out, and which market it was built for. The year is the tricky part, because LG codes it one way on OLED sets and a different way on LED sets. Once you know the order, any LG model number on a sticker, a receipt or a shop listing tells you most of what matters.

Where to find the model number
On the TV itself, the model number is printed on the black-and-white label on the back of the set, or along the bottom edge on thin panels. In the menu, LG's own path depends on the webOS version: on recent sets press Settings, then All Settings, then Support, then TV Information; on sets from before roughly 2019 it is All Settings, then General, then About This TV. On 2018 and newer models there is also a shortcut: press the Mute button three times in a row and the model information appears on screen.
The model number, piece by piece
LG builds its model numbers from the same set of positions, in this order: panel family, screen size, series letter, year code, then a short tuner and region tail. Not every set uses every position, but this covers current and recent models. Here is a full example based on the TV model OLED65C4PUA.

A European set of the same generation reads OLED65C47LA instead: same panel, same year, different tail.
Panel family
The prefix names the display technology, and it is also the first thing that tells you roughly where the set sits in LG's lineup:

Two older prefixes turn up on second-hand sets: S for Super UHD, the premium LED line before QNED existed, and L for Full HD LED. LG has also started using MRGB for its newest Micro RGB backlight sets.
Series letter
Within the OLED line the series letter is the important one, and it is not a simple ranking. Some letters mark a tier, others mark a form factor, and that catches people out: a letter further along the alphabet does not automatically mean a better television.

For most buyers the ladder that matters is A and B at the bottom, C in the middle, G at the top. On LED sets there is no series letter: the tier is a number instead, as in QNED80 or QNED90, where higher means more backlight zones or a better processor rather than a different panel.
Screen size
The two digits right after the panel-family prefix are the screen size in inches: 55, 65, 77 and so on. On LED sets the size sits at the very front of the code, before everything else. This part never varies by region or year.
Year code: two different schemes
This is the part most worth knowing, because LG uses two different year-coding schemes depending on the line, and mixing them up gives the wrong year. LG does not publish a single consumer decoder table for this; the tables below are compiled by matching each code against the TVs LG itself has sold under that code each year, cross-checked against independent model trackers.
OLED sets: a digit
On an OLED the year is a single digit right after the series letter, counting up one per year, with X standing in for 2020:

The digit has now come around once, so a 6 is either 2016 or 2026. The rest of the code settles it: a 2026 set is a G6 or C6 with a current series letter and often a two-digit European tail like G66 or G69, while a 2016 C6 is a much older TV that will also show it in its webOS version.
LED sets: a letter
On QNED, NanoCell and plain LED the year is a letter instead, in its own sequence. It skips several letters, and it restarted at A in 2025:

Which scheme am I reading?
The panel family decides it, and you can see that at the front of the number before you ever reach the year code:
- Starts with OLED, so the year is the digit after the series letter. OLED65C3 is 2023.
- Starts with QNED, NANO or a size plus U, so the year is the letter near the end. 65QNED80T is 2024, 65UA7700 is 2025.
Reading the wrong table is the usual mistake, because both a digit and a letter look plausible on an unfamiliar code. LG's own developer forum has separately noted that the model-year and platform-version pairing is not always perfectly documented even on their side, so treat an unfamiliar code as a strong estimate rather than a certainty, and check the model on LG's own site if it matters.
Tuner and region tail
The last two or three letters cover the tuner, the market and a design revision. The tuner letter is the reliable part, because it names an actual broadcast standard built into the set:

The letters around it are less consistent. In practice you mostly see the tail as a group: PUA and PUB on North American sets, PLA and LA on European ones, PVA around the Gulf and Africa, where the last letter is a design revision rather than a feature. LG publishes no decoder for these, and the available references disagree on whether the first letter is the region or a retailer variant, so we will not print a breakdown we cannot stand behind. Treat the tail as "which market and which tuner", not as a spec.
One generation is often sold under several close tails that differ in the bundled stand or wall mount, the remote, or which sizes that market gets, not in the picture itself.
Why the region tail matters when buying
For a set bought new in its own market these letters are trivia; for a used or imported TV they are not. The tuner is the one hardware difference the code states outright: a U-suffix ATSC set from North America receives no European broadcast TV over an aerial, and the other way round. Beyond that, the LG Content Store's app catalogue follows the TV's service region, so local catch-up apps may be missing on an import; LG's warranty is normally tied to the country of purchase; and a 120 V North American set needs checking before use on a 230 V grid. The panel itself is usually the same within a generation, but published reviews typically test the North American variant, so an imported variant can deviate in details.
Short forms you see in shops
Almost nobody writes the full code. The set labelled OLED65C4PUA is sold as OLED65C4, listed as 65C4, and reviewed as simply the C4. These are the same television: the dropped letters are the tuner and market tail, which is identical for every unit a given shop sells. What survives is the part that identifies the TV, which is exactly the part this page decodes.
It is on a used listing or a marketplace import that the full code earns its keep, because there the dropped letters are the ones that say which market the set was built for.
LG's TV browser engine
Every LG Smart TV runs LG's own webOS platform, and each webOS version bundles a specific version of the so-called Chromium browser engine, which is also the base of the Google Chrome browser that you may be used to from desktop PCs or mobile phones. This is important, as the embedded Chromium version decides the web capabilities of your TV and the supported video codecs. It directly affects the apps running on your TV, especially its own web browser. Sometimes updating your TV software may update the Chromium version too, unlocking new web features or fixing bugs and glitches that appear while browsing or using apps, for example TV Cast and the Screen Mirroring app. This is the version LG publishes for each TV model year:

Questions people ask
How do I know the year of my LG TV from the model number?
It depends on the line. OLED models use a single digit right after the series letter, so OLED65C3 is 2023 (X stands in for 2020, and a 6 is 2016 or 2026). QNED, NanoCell and plain LED models use a letter from a separate sequence instead: B is 2026, A is 2025, T is 2024, R is 2023, Q is 2022, P is 2021.
What is the difference between LG's OLED and QNED model numbers?
OLED is LG's self-lit panel line and QNED is its Mini-LED-plus-quantum-dot LED line; they are different underlying panels, not just a naming choice. They also use different year-coding schemes, a digit for OLED and a letter for QNED, so the same character can mean a different year on each.
Does the series letter on an LG TV affect picture quality?
Within one panel family, a higher series generally means more backlight zones, higher peak brightness or a newer processor, all of which affect picture quality. It does not change the underlying panel technology, which is set by the prefix (OLED, QNED, NanoCell or LED) instead.
What is the difference between the LG B, C and G series?

Does an LG TV's browser report its model number to a website?

Why are there several LG model numbers that look almost the same?
