How much internet speed do you need for 4K streaming?

The short version: About 25 Mbps for a single 4K stream, and most modern connections clear that without breaking a sweat. The longer version is why you can have a fast plan and still get a spinning wheel, or a picture that quietly slips to a soft, blurry HD. Here is the whole picture.

The short answer

Streaming services publish a recommended speed for each quality. These are the per-stream figures worth remembering:

Netflix officially asks for 15 Mbps for 4K, YouTube suggests around 20, and Disney+ and Apple TV+ lean nearer 25. Twenty-five is the number to aim for: It covers every service and leaves a little headroom so a brief dip does not drop your quality.

Speed is per stream, not per household

That 25 Mbps is for one 4K stream. If someone else is streaming, gaming online or on a video call at the same time, their needs stack on top of yours. Two 4K streams want roughly 50 Mbps between them; a busy household with several 4K TVs and a games console is happier on 100 Mbps or more. This is the single most common reason a plan that looks fast enough on paper feels slow in the evening: It is being shared.

Why a fast plan still buffers

Having the speed on your bill is not the same as it reaching the TV the moment you press play. The usual suspects:

  • Wi-Fi, not the plan. Speed bleeds away between the router and the TV, especially through walls or across the house. A 100 Mbps plan can arrive as 20 at a far-off set.
  • "Up to" speeds. Home plans are sold as "up to" a figure. At peak evening hours, when the whole street is watching something, the real speed can sag well under it.
  • An ageing router. A router that is several years old, or shut inside a cabinet, throttles everything downstream of it.
  • The source, not you. Sometimes the service or the title is the bottleneck. If one app stutters while the others are fine, the problem is at their end, not on your line.

Wired beats Wi-Fi for a fixed TV

For a television that never moves, running a network cable from the router is the single biggest upgrade you can make. It steps around every Wi-Fi problem at once: Nothing lost through walls, no interference, no sagging when the microwave runs. If the TV sits near the router, or you can run a cable to it, do that first. Where a cable is impossible, a mesh Wi-Fi system, or just a node in the same room as the TV, is the next best thing.

The number on your bill is the plan. The number that matters is the one reaching the television. Questions people ask

Is 25 Mbps enough for 4K?

For a single 4K stream, yes, with a little room to spare. The catch is the phrase "per stream": If other people or devices are using the connection at the same time, you need roughly that much again for each of them.

Why does 4K buffer when my speed test says I am fast?

Almost always Wi-Fi or timing. A speed test on your phone next to the router flatters the connection; the TV across the house at 8pm sees far less. Test from the TV itself, and if you can, try a network cable, which usually settles it.

Does 4K use more data than Full HD?

Quite a bit more, roughly double: Around 7 GB an hour for 4K against about 3 GB for Full HD. If your plan has a monthly data cap, that difference is worth keeping an eye on.
