What this test can and cannot tell you

Plenty of TV testing tools overstate what a web page can see. Here is exactly where the limits are.

What this browser can decode

Reliable. If a codec shows supported, this browser genuinely decoded it. If it shows not supported, this browser genuinely could not, at the moment of testing.

What the TV's apps can play

A separate question entirely. Your TV can decode AV1 inside its Netflix app while its browser fails the same codec, because TV browsers are frequently years behind the TV's own built-in software.

Whether a missing codec matters

Usually not. H.264 is the universal fallback almost every service can use. Missing HEVC, VP9 or AV1 in a browser rarely changes what you can actually watch through the TV's own apps.

Questions people ask

The test says my TV does not support AV1. Is that a problem?

Almost certainly not. This test reads what the TV's web browser can decode, and TV browsers are typically several years behind the TV's own apps. Your Netflix or YouTube app may well play AV1 perfectly while the browser cannot. Missing AV1 in a browser is normal and rarely affects anything you actually watch.

What is the difference between H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1?

H.264 is the oldest and most universal, supported by effectively everything. HEVC (H.265) and VP9 carry most current 4K streaming. AV1 is the newest and most efficient, which is why Netflix and YouTube prefer it where a device can decode it, since it uses less bandwidth for the same quality.

Does this test check Dolby Digital or Dolby Atmos?

It checks whether the browser can decode Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), the compressed audio formats behind most streaming. Dolby Atmos is an object-based extension carried inside Dolby Digital Plus or TrueHD streams, and whether it actually plays as Atmos depends on your full audio chain, not just browser codec support.
